For anyone who thinks that librarians have an easy job (or that your child can’t be harmed when just a few feet away from you), I’m here to break that little bubble you live in:

A convicted sex offender was arrested this week and charged with raping a 6-year-old boy in the New Bedford public library, feet away from his mother, who was working on a computer.

Lieutenant Silva said a librarian noticed Mr. Saunders speaking to the boy after the alleged rape. The librarian remembered Mr. Saunders’s name from a previous encounter, he said, and looked him up on the state’s sexual offender registry. The poor kid. I hope that his mother as the sense to make sure he knows that not all libraries are scary places. And, I hope that the librarian’s boss gives her time off (can you imagine finding out that not only had you recognized a sex offender, but that he might have raped a kid in your own library?!).
